A sleeping beauty
As the clock struck midnight last night, one person already tucked up in bed was stunning violinist Linzi Stoppard. For the daughter-in-law of playwright Sir Tom Stoppard is preparing to play to an audience of 1.5 million, including Gordon Brown and London mayor Boris Johnson, at a televised gig outside the Ritz in Piccadilly as part of London's New Year's Day parade.

Linzi told me yesterday: 'There will be no New Year's Eve for me. I have to rehearse with my band all day and then be up early next morning. But I don't mind. It's a thrilling way to start what will be an incredible year for us.'

The 29-year-old's group, Fuse, will open the event with a Jimi Hendrix-style God Save The Queen. 'They asked us to do the National Anthem - but we want to do something a bit different,' said Linzi.
